UPARC team to serve as honorary crew at grand prix
ST. PETERSBURG — UPARC will participate in The Arc Racing Program for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg March 28-30.
Twenty persons from UPARC’s local chapter, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, are heading to the street course to serve as honorary crew members for RS Werkes Racing’s two cars.
Race team owner Don Istook and his wife, Laurie, share The Arc’s commitment to ensure that people with such disabilities are fully included, especially when it comes to employment opportunities, according to a news release. Two of Laurie Istook’s brothers, Mark and Tyson Heitt, were diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, but that hasn’t stopped them from working as an integral part of Werkes Racing.
The Istooks are offering the crew opportunity in other locations, too, as the team moves from town to town to compete in the Pirelli World Challenge Series.
The guests from UPARC will get a hands-on experience in the paddock with the drivers and their teams. The Arc’s national office will post updates from the season’s races on its blog, Facebook and Twitter in the coming months. The races also are shown live online and later on NBC Sports.
